LOVR Icons: Sarah Jessica Parker
Hello, lov(e)r! This one is for all the Sex and the City fans out there. In this article, LOVR takes a closer look at some of SJP’s business ventures, exploring how – through clever branding – she’s been able to enter numerous marketplaces.
If you’re anything like us, you’ve kept a close eye on our beloved SJP as her career went from strength to strength after the show’s conclusion in 2004. Admittedly, it's often hard to tell where SJP and Carrie Bradshaw begin and end, with SJP’s timeless signature style also rendering her an unforgettable fashion icon.
This week, we couldn’t help but wonder… how did she do it?!
FRAGRANCE AND FASHION
In 2005, just one year after the conclusion of Sex and the City, SJP released her first fragrance, “Lovely”, a delicate, musky floral that SJP claims to have originally designed for herself.
But “Lovely” was just the beginning. Two years later, in March 2007, SJP released BITTEN, an inclusive and affordable line of clothing. After almost 10 years playing fashionista, Carrie Bradshaw, SJP’s statement that fashion should be more accessible spoke to fans who aspired to emulate the characters confidence but couldn’t afford those frequent trips to Manolo Blahnik.
WINE
Sure, diehard fans would have loved for SJP to release a Cosmopolitan, but we think that “X, SJP”, her collaboration with wine brand Invivo, is even better. Marketed as “a unique blend created by Sarah Jessica Parker”, “X, SJ” by Invivo has rapidly achieved international acclaim, including a nod in the Wine Spectator’s Top 100 World’s Best Wines list.
WALLPAPER
Who could forget the iconic scene in SATC The Movie when Carrie redecorates her apartment? The COLOURS, the TEXTURES, the WALLPAPER. It was a design entirely unique to both SJP’s and Carrie’s design sensibility which, at times, intersects in an indistinguishable way.
So, it was hardly a surprise when, in 2022, SJP collaborated with long-time friend and interior designer, Eric Hughes, to release a line of wallpaper inspired by the wallpaper in Carrie’s iconic East Village Brownstone.
As an extra special treat for fans, the wallpaper was cleverly included in the Sex and the City spinoff, And Just Like That, in 2022, garnering maximum exposure for the one of the many divine designs.
LITERATURE
Both SJP and Carrie are renowned for being voracious readers, so it was high time when SJP announced her literary imprint, SJP for Hogarth. With a list of titles lovingly sourced, curated, and promoted by SJP herself, the imprint has experienced rising popularity since its inception.
In summary, SJP sells more than a product. She sells a lifestyle. By purchasing the quality products that she sells, fans and supporters get that little bit closer to living life like Carrie Bradshaw.
With her distinctive, signature style, SJP has appealed to a much wider audience than Sex and the City fans; by branching out across several industries, she has secured her status as a cultural mogul and whip smart businessperson.
